From one specimen to a reliable harvest

Use plant darts, automatic Grow Beds and a reserve of seeds to make field research support your base.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Unlock plant darts through Field Sedation, use them to advance a useful field plant, and bring seed stock back to a prepared greenhouse. Automate established crops while keeping experimental beds separate. Put processing stations beside the storage that supplies them.

Define the bottleneck you want to remove

Choose a crop for an actual shortage. If you regularly run short of hydration, Sunbeam Lumus is a different answer from a dense food source. If immunity limits your trips, Cobalt Sargent is a useful Headlands target because of its IM-X properties. A rare specimen is not automatically the best use of every growing slot.

Write down what you want from the plant: nutrition, hydration, a processing ingredient or research output. Then establish one repeatable crop before filling a greenhouse. This makes it easier to tell whether the new setup has actually reduced the number of collection trips.

Use Field Sedation to obtain seed stock

Follow the Field Sedation side quest to unlock the Dart Gun and plant darts. Plant darts can advance growth, which helps when the source plant has not yet reached the stage that gives the material you need. Select the appropriate plant dart; a tool used around wildlife is not automatically the right ammunition for a plant.

  1. Unlock and prepare the quest tools and the plant ammunition.
  2. Find and identify the desired plant.
  3. Use the plant dart and inspect the resulting growth stage.
  4. Collect the produce or seed stock with the correct activated collection tool.
  5. Process the collected material for seeds where required.
  6. Return to a working bed and start the base crop.

Watch what the target actually produces. Do not fire repeatedly by a fixed timer or assume every plant will provide the same input. The purpose is to obtain a useful starting sample, not to spend ammunition on a specimen your current lab cannot use.

Automate the crop you already understand

Automatic Grow Beds collect and store plant products. They are useful when exploration keeps taking you away from a harvest you would otherwise miss. That makes them a good destination for a crop you want consistently, while a separate experiment stays easy to inspect.

Check the collected output after the first cycle. Keep enough seed stock to restart the crop before consuming or processing the whole result. Automation handles collection; it does not decide how much of a new hybrid you should reserve or which need your next expedition will face.

Lay out the greenhouse around its services. Leave the B-pipe's central position clear, including stairs above and below, provide the light it needs, and preserve water and power during expansion. A larger room with interrupted services does not produce more than a small working one.

Measure output against the recipe you need

Establish a baseline with the crop you already use: what is harvested, which supplies it can become and which material is still missing from the recipe. If the plant produces plenty but the recipe remains unavailable, solve the missing ingredient or station access before allocating another bed.

There is no need to fill an entire base with an untested arrangement. Run the experiment in a small area, keep the useful crop available elsewhere, and expand after you see the improvement you wanted. The practical measure is whether you now have enough of the right supply for the next trip.

Shorten the trip from harvest to crafting

Place an organic-material locker close to the Multi Cooker and a metal locker beside the Fabricator. Crafting stations can draw from nearby storage, but storage across the room may be outside the useful range. Test with one recipe before making a larger storage arrangement.

If ingredients appear missing, put the required items into your personal inventory and check the recipe again. If it now works, adjust the locker placement rather than changing your growing setup.
