FIELD NOTE 12 / Quest & item
Honeycomb Second Life: Composter and biomass guide
Unlock Second Life after Miracle Season, build and feed the Composter, and get biomass from Grow Beds when plant rotting is disabled.

THE SHORT ANSWER
Complete Miracle Season, build a Composter, feed it plant matter and wait for biomass. With plant rotting disabled, digging a spare plant out of a Grow Bed also gives biomass; that does not replace the Composter quest objectives.
Before you begin
- Hotfix #3 or a later version
- Miracle Season completed
- Plant matter you can spare after preserving food and research supplies
Why Second Life might be missing
Check the prerequisite first: Miracle Season must be complete. Having started its dart objective is not the same as finishing the quest. Return to your active objectives if that earlier task is still in progress.
Second Life was introduced in Hotfix #3. On a save that already finished Miracle Season, load the save in the updated game and check the quest list. Starting a new character is not part of the stated unlock route. If the prerequisite is complete but the quest is absent, check the installed update before changing your base.
Follow the build, feed and wait sequence
- Build the Composter. Follow its displayed construction requirements and place the completed structure where you can access it.
- Feed it plant matter. Interact with the Composter and provide the plant input required by its interface.
- Allow production to run. The quest includes waiting for biomass; placing the structure is not an instant output event.
- Check the result and objective. Inspect the Composter for produced biomass and read the current quest instruction before moving to another task.
Work through these checkpoints in order. An empty Composter and a fed Composter that is still producing have different next actions. Rebuilding either one repeatedly skips the more useful check: whether the required input was actually supplied.
Get biomass when plant rotting is disabled
Digging a plant out of a Grow Bed gives biomass. Use a plant you can spare and inspect your inventory after removing it. This provides a route that does not depend on waiting for carried plants to decay.
Harvest useful material first and preserve replacement seeds before clearing a productive bed. Removing a plant changes that crop, so choose a spare specimen instead of sacrificing your only useful research parent. For a continuing supply from surplus plant matter, follow the Composter sequence above.
Getting biomass from a bed and completing Second Life are separate tasks. If the quest still asks you to build or feed a Composter, follow that objective even if you already hold biomass.
Choose the input without losing useful samples
Set aside food for your next trip and the specimens you still need for research or propagation. Use spare plant matter for the Composter instead of treating every plant in your inventory as waste. Keep reserves in a clearly separated storage area so an urgent biomass task does not consume your only useful sample.
If you do not have a dependable surplus, establish a routine crop first. The harvest and production guide helps you plan that supply. For the preceding dart task, return to Miracle Season and Plant Booster Darts.
Diagnose the stage that has stopped
| What you see | Check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No Second Life quest | Game update and Miracle Season completion | Load the completed save on Hotfix #3 or later |
| Composter not yet built | Displayed materials and placement | Complete the structure before looking for output |
| Built, but no input provided | The Composter interaction and plant matter | Feed the required input |
| Fed, but no biomass yet | Production state and the waiting objective | Allow the process to finish and inspect the output |
Hotfix #5 fixes Composter collision. Update the game before retrying a collision problem; feeding the machine and waiting for biomass are still separate steps.
Keep the objective visible while checking the machine. Do not assume that extra nearby plants count as feeding it, or that waiting fixes a structure that never received its input. Once biomass appears, follow the quest's current instruction and reserve the output for the task you need it for. If fertilizer is still blocked after that, check Canine Teeth, Horn Shards and the Bone Meal step.
