FIELD NOTE 02 / Beginner
Manage immunity, food and the trip home
Separate immunity from hydration and stamina, choose useful food and make safer return decisions.

THE SHORT ANSWER
Outside a sealed base, immunity decreases as Hennessy is exposed to Sota7’s atmosphere. Equip an Immunity Pump to extend your field time, carry both hydration and nutrition, and return before several needs become urgent at once. Your mode changes how quickly vital stats drain.
Before you begin
- Know your selected mode
- Identify a sealed return point
- Take food and hydration for the return trip
Immunity is a separate expedition limit
Breathable air is not necessarily harmless air. Sota7 contains pathogens unfamiliar to an off-world explorer, and remaining outdoors without precautions reduces immunity. Staying inside EON-sealed structures restores immunity, and IM-X-rich fruit can restore it while you are outside. An Immunity Pump increases your immunity and gives you more time in the field. Crafting it is not enough: equip the pump in your inventory before leaving.
Early antibiotics protect Hennessy during the opening progression. Around the Creature Comforts bed-rest step, that protection expires and immunity becomes a practical supply problem. Prepare the working shelter, food, water and pump before moving through that transition.
Use those facts to plan the outing: start from a supplied base, equip the pump when available, and keep a clear route back. Food that addresses thirst is not automatically an immunity solution. Check the need you are trying to solve before consuming a scarce item.
Survivalist and Space Hell drain vital stats faster than the balanced experience. A comfortable trip length in Scientist is therefore not a safe timer to reuse in a harder mode. Observe the current run rather than following a universal number of minutes.
Pack by function, not by item count
| Resource | Useful for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Sunbeam Lumus | Raw fruit and hydration | Limited nutrition alone |
| Sweet Tarax | Early food and juicy produce | Its fibrous stems also have crafting value |
| Ice Bonebell | Minor healing | Often collected near predator nests |
| Cobalt Sargent | Safe tea component with IM-X properties | Found in Headlands caves and dungeons |
| Prism Nut | Dense, fatty nutrition | Rapidly increases thirst |
A stack of one item can leave a second need unanswered. If you bring Prism Nut for a late expedition, budget hydration alongside it. When gathering Sweet Tarax, keep the crafting use of its stems in mind before consuming or processing your whole stock.
Do not carry Valley eating habits into the Headlands
Green Naga and Ebony Linter are poisonous raw. Their value comes from processing them for recipes, not treating them like Sunbeam Lumus fruit. Keep your ready-to-eat supplies separate from ingredients waiting for processing.
Read the selected recipe and the item information before making a new plant your emergency food. If an ingredient is meant for a recipe, obtaining that ingredient is only the first step. A plant looking familiar or being easy to collect does not change its raw-food warning.
Make the return decision early
- Choose a specific target before you leave: a known species, a missing material or one objective.
- Watch immunity alongside food, thirst and stamina rather than waiting for a single crisis.
- When the target is collected, return while the route is still manageable.
- Process time-sensitive samples and restore your supplies before a second trip.
- If the route took more resources than expected, shorten the next route instead of taking the same risk with a smaller reserve.
Short pauses can help with exertion, but do not make them a substitute for a supplied return point. Do not apply older “knockout and recover” advice to Space Hell: permanent death changes the consequence of taking one more chance.
Three patterns that end expeditions badly
- Going farther because the inventory is not full
- Storage capacity is not a measure of remaining immunity or safe travel time. Return when the objective is done or supplies call for it.
- Eating every new plant to discover what it does
- Catalogue it and read its use. Headlands processing ingredients can be poisonous raw.
- Chasing healing materials into a nest
- A healing resource can be valuable and still be a poor emergency destination. Keep a reserve before entering the riskier region.
